Ahoy, mates! These amusing nautical signboards are steeped in maritime charm, the perfect finishing touches to the den, drinking spot or cabin of that captain of the ship in your life! Trade signs date back to 14th Century Europe. These first signs usually only featured an emblem to designate the trade for the un-reading public. Later in the 16th century, written text was added around the emblem. Nameboards that hung below the sign also made their appearance at this time. It was common practice for the merchant or tradesman to remove the nameboard when leaving. This way, customers would know if the store was open or closed. A Brief History of the Pub Sign

Most historians agree that it was the Ancient Romans who get the credit for originating pub signs. Roman wine merchants would hang vine leaves or bushes on a pole just outside their establishment to let the illiterate public know where to find drink and games. As time went on, the Romans added illustrations to signs outside their venue. One of the earliest of these signs depicts two Roman slaves carrying a vase of wine between them.
