America's Cup Yacht Models

The idea for what was then known as the "Great Exhibition of 1851" came from Britain's Prince Albert. An invitation was sent over to America. Originally intended for British yachts only, it was decided that the regatta would be open to yachts of all nations. It would be the first such international regatta in history. On race day, August 22, 1851, the U.S. yacht America lined up with fifteen British yachts. In the end, much to the embarrassment of the British government, the upstart America won by about twenty minutes. The sleek design of the America not only helped achieve victory, but showed the world the United States' technological power. Today, the America's Cup regatta is the world's third most watch sporting event.
